I think my biggest responsibility is to remind my students that they are important and that every decision they make is important. My biggest challenge every day is to remind my students that each decision has consequences. Some consequences are pleasant and some aren't. I think it's my responsibility to to teach the kids to think critically so they can analyze situations and make decisions that benefit them as individuals. There are days that I ask myself, "Why am I doing this?" Some days it feels like we aren't getting anywhere. But it seems like on those days when it seems hopeless the kids do something that makes it worth it. I think we all want to feel like we matter and we are appreciated.

Why?
My purpose as an educator is to help my students exercise their potential to the best of their ability. I know that not every kid I work with is going to be a doctor or a lawyer but I know that every kid can do something and be great at something. We are social animals and each member of the society is important. I think sometimes kids feel like they shouldn't try just because they aren't going to be the best in the class. It's a constant battle to talk the kids into trying and reminding them that if they try their best it is good enough. I guess it's almost trying to get the kids comfortable in their own skin. I believe that if you are going to do something you should always do your best. If you are a dishwasher then be the best dishwasher. If you are a salesman then be the best salesman. I refuse to settle for mediocrity and am trying to teach my kids that.

I agree that that you expect the best from each of your students and that you encourage them to always do their best in everything that they do. I also believe that critical thinking is key skill that students need as a part of everyday life.
ReplyDeleteCecilia, I was inspired by your belief in encouraging students to do their best and not to settle. That is a great and very American value to teach. I agree with you in that students should try their best and I think that goes into children finding their passion, because they will know when what they do is fun and easy and is what they do best. I also liked what you said about critical thinking because I agree. Critical thinking is so important today in our fast paced society.
